ART® (Active Release Techniques)

Active Release Techniques (ART) is a touch and case-management system that allows a practitioner to diagnose and treat soft-tissue injuries which may occur during the course of training.

What is soft tissue?

Soft tissue refers primarily to muscle, tendon, fascia and nerves.

  • Cumulative Trauma Disorder

Cumulative injury disorder (CTD) is a group of injuries to the muscles, tendons, bones, blood vessels, fascia and/or nerves. CTD results from an acute, repetitive or constant pressure/tension injury.

  • Acute Injury

An acute injury is when the muscle and fascia tear. This immediately results in inflammation.

  • Repetitive Motion Injury

The severity of a repetitive motion injury depends on specific physical factors. Factors such as: the insult to the tissue, the number of repetitions, the force or tension of each repetition, the percent of maximum strength and the amount of rest between each repetition.

How will the athlete respond to treatment?

If the athlete has suffered a soft-tissue injury, symptoms are often duplicated during treatment and are usually relieved during the first or second treatment. Strength, speed and endurance usually improve within the first few visits. It is normal to have the athlete test these after two to three visits unless contraindicated. When the soft-tissue problem is truly resolved the symptoms will not return unless the injury happens again. We also advise the athlete on how to avoid re-injury. This includes instructions in exercise, flexibility, posture, as well as, a thorough explanation of the mechanism of injury.
